TOMS Shoes have become iconic both for their distinctive Alparagata or Espadrille style which is available in a wide range of colours and fabrics and also their ‘One for one’ initiative’ where they pledge that for every pair of TOMS shoes sold they will give another pair to some one in need.
TOMS was launched when founder Blake Mycoskie was in Argentia and was struck by the spirit of the children and people who had so little, not even a pair of shoes to protect their feet. He wanted to do something to help and that something was TOMS shoes. Since their launch TOMS shoes have become hugely popular and they have now expanded their range even futher to include a range of other shoes and eyewear. The brand also creates vegan shoes and has recently launched an eco collection made from organic cotton and recycled materials.
So far TOMS shoes have given over a million pairs of shoes to those in need but they are also striving to make even more of a difference by expanding their local production for giving shoes and creating jobs in the areas that they give. They have also supported a number of different charities including Charlize Therin Africa Outreach Project, Charity : Water, Movember (for men’s health) and Eastern Congo Initiative, a regional development charity.
The story of the TOMS ethical fashion start up is an inspiring one. It has become much more than just a fashion brand and can be described as a movement. Founder Blake Mycoskie has written about it in his book “Start Something That Matters” which gives lots of tips for anyone wanting to start up an ethical fashion brand or any other business that can make a difference. The TOMS movement has initiated a number of different opportunities for everyone to make a difference including World Sight Day, One Day Without Shoes and Ticket to give, where a member of the community to gets to accompany them on a giving trip distributing shoes to children around the world.
