Seasalt Cornwall specialises in stylish clothing and accessories inspired by the coast of England. A number of their products are made by small producers supporting the remaining maritime textile traditions and other small scale manufacturing in coastal areas around the UK and Ireland. By next year they plan to be manufacturing at least 10% of their clothing range in the UK. This brand has a strong signature characterised by its casual and nautical style, fun prints and practical outdoor wear.
Seasalt Cornwall – Sustainability and Ethics
Their clothing is made using a variety of fabrics which include organic cotton and bamboo. In fact they were the first fashion company in the UK to use cotton certified by the Soil Association and currently about 60% of their collection is made using organic cotton. They have also developed their own sustainable (organic), hardwearing and waterproof fabric for making outdoor wear, Tin Cloth® and continue to look for recycled or sustainable alternatives where possible.
All of the products not manufactured in the UK are made in modern and safe environments, in India, Sri Lanka, Turkey and China. The company is also signed up to the Ethical Trading Initiative base code and expects their suppliers to work towards these standards.
The brand has its roots firmly along the Cornish coast and the traditions and way of life of these communities are still very much part of the company. The first shop in Penzance is still in the same place. They sell traditional Guernseys, made in Guernsey, a great seafaring knit for keeping toasty and warm in even the coolest coastal breeze. Their traditional hand crafted smocks are also made locally and great for sailors, gardeners and artists. Their handmade mohair socks are great for cosying up indoors after a day full of fresh sea air.
Most recently they have introduced their Artists and Potters Collection which is inspired by the clothing worn by generations of artists and potters on the island. The collection includes the Arum Lily dress, the Bramley dress and the Totnes shirt dress, all light weight casual dresses which are perfect for spring and summer. The Saffron skirt incorporates a dip dye effect for an on trend look.
